On February 11, 2015, the Litigation and Real Property Sections held their Ski-CLE Day at Park City Resort, providing several hours of CLE credit, lunch, and skiing to 45 attendees. The presentation went very well, with good input from the audience and excellent participation by law students. CLICK HERE for more details. On February 27, 2015, the Section held its first annual New Lawyer Introduction to the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse. The event provided four hours of CLE credit and included a reception with judges, tips from law clerks, lunch, a courthouse tour, and courtroom observation. CLICK HERE for more information.
The Litigation Section’s Quarterly Rise & Shine Breakfast CLE will take place on March 20, 2015 from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. at the Law and Justice Center, 645 S. 200 E, Salt Lake City. Professor James R. Holbrook, S.J. Quinney College of Law, will speak on the subject of “Cognitive Biases in Negotiation: What They Are and How to Overcome Them.” The cost is $10 for Section members; $30 for all others. The Litigation Section will hold its Quarterly Luncheon on April 3, 2015, from 12 to 1 p.m, entitled “On Writing Well in the Trial Court.” The event will feature Judge Claudia Laycock of the Fourth District and Judge Thomas L. Kay of the Second District and will take place at the Utah Law and Justice Center, 645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City, Utah. Cost is $10 for Section members; $25 for all others. Judges Laycock and Kay will present their thoughts on what constitutes effective legal writing, including how to be persuasive and what to avoid. CLICK HERE to register online by April 1, 2015.
Once again, it is time to prepare for this year’s Southern Utah Federal Law Symposium, which will be held at the beautiful Courtyard Marriott in sunny St. George, May 7 through 9, 2015.
This year’s symposium will feature:
Presentations by Utah Federal Judges, including, “The Wonderful World of Hearsay” by Senior Judges Dee Benson and Dale A. Kimball (United States District Court - Utah). We also expect to hear from Chief Judge David Nuffer, Judge Robert J. Shelby, Magistrate Judges Paul M. Warner and Robert T. Braithwaite, Senior Judge Ted Stewart, Judge William T. Thurman (United States Bankruptcy Court) and others.
Friday CLE: “Practice Pointers and Pet Peeves,” presented by several of the judicial clerks.
Reception and musical performance at Tuacahn Center for the Arts.
Internationally recognized speaker Hyrum Smith, Franklin Covey, will provide our ethics keynote.
Friday keynote will be given by Mickey Edwards, a former Congressman and current Director of the Aspen Institute’s Rodel Fellowships in Public Leadership.
Attendees will get nine hours of CLE, approved in both Utah and Nevada, including one hour of ethics. The cost for the entire event, including the Tuacahn reception, breakfast, keynote lunch and all the CLE is only $175 for Litigation Section Members! CLICK HERE to register.
The Second Biennial Litigation Section Trial Academy will take place Tuesday, May 26 through Thursday, May 28. This event will follow the NITA model that features group lectures followed by small group “hands on” simulations for attendees to practice their trial skills. As in 2013, the Section is recruiting only the best trial lawyers to present at this event. Attendance is highly recommended for younger lawyers. Look for more information soon on registration. Space will be very limited.
