SAVE THE DATE
Our law student Winter Social will take place on January 14, 2016! Watch for more details to come. We will be having our Section’s Introduction to the Matheson Courthouse: Tips for Practicing in Utah State Courts that Every Lawyer Should Know, on January 15, 2016. Plan for it now!
FOURTH QUARTER LUNCHEON On December 7, approximately 160 people attended our Fourth Quarter Luncheon, discussing the “Latest changes to the Utah Rules of Civil Procedure.” Judges Toomey, Anderson, and Blanch answered questions about the changes that have taken effect recently, what attorneys should watch for, traps to avoid, and other important points related to those changes. The judges, who are members of the Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure, also discussed further Rule changes that are now being considered. Rod Andreason, Chair-Elect of the Litigation Section and member of the Advisory Committee, moderated the event. The luncheon and discussion was excellent and informative. We are grateful to Judges Toomey, Anderson, and Blanch for their service, and especially donating their time to prepare for and answer questions to the Bar about this crucial topic. We are also grateful to Louise York, Amy Faust, and the rest of the federal court staff for helping make this event possible.
FOURTH QUARTER RISE & SHINE
We are grateful to our esteemed panel for our Fourth Quarter Rise & Shine Breakfast! Kenneth L. Landis, Esq., Vice-President ALAS, Inc.; Hon. Kate A. Toomey, Utah Court of Appeals; and Litigation Section Chair Heather L. Thuet, Christensen & Jensen, all provided a strong and informative presentation on how to avoid legal malpractice claims. We are grateful to our panelists and for all who helped make this ethics CLE possible!
Litigation Section’s Fall Forum Track on Openings and Closings a Huge Success! The Litigation Section sponsored a multi-hour workshop on openings and closings featuring some of Utah’s preeminent trial attorneys as well as several Judges. The panel and presentation was coordinated by Parr Brown’s Jon Hafen and Strong & Hanni’s Michael Stahler. For the presentation, Stahler moderated the discussions. Alan Sullivan, of Snell Wilmer, and Kristine Johnson of Parsons Behle both presented simulated opening arguments. Bryon Benevento of Dorsey and Whitney and Matt Lalli of Snell Wilmer provided the closing arguments. The Section wishes to thank the esteemed panel of presenters, that included: Judge Richard McKelvie, Kristine Johnson, Judge Clark Waddoups, Judge Thomas Kay, Bryon Benevento, Justice Kate Toomey, Ellen Maycock, Alan Sullivan, Matt Lalli, and Shelley Spiecker, Ph.D. The room was packed for each of the presentations. If you missed the event, it will be available through the CLE Office’s Video Library.
